- LETTERS, Page 8THE HOSTAGE AGONY
-
- It is an international disgrace for an American Marine to
- be shown hanging from a rope (NATION, Aug. 14). What is it going
- to take for the Bush Administration to realize that military
- action is the only way to stop terrorism in the Middle East? In
- 1981, at the end of the Iran hostage crisis, Ronald Reagan
- promised "swift and effective retribution" in response to any
- future terrorist acts against Americans. I believe Lieut.
- Colonel William Higgins and other Marines would be alive today
- if our political leaders had practiced what they preached.

- The U.S. cannot be held accountable for the safety of its
- citizens who choose to live in a precarious land. Those who go
- on official U.S. business or of their own accord are well aware
- of the possibility of abduction. If they are kidnaped, America
- can attempt to rescue them, but terrorists should not be allowed
- to hold our entire Government hostage.

- The Israelis are the only ones with the guts to fight
- terrorism. The leaders of other nations sit by while their
- citizens are kidnaped, but Israel is fighting fire with fire.
- By abducting Sheik Obeid, this brave country gave the murderous
- Arabs a dose of their own medicine.
